American Seniors Association

I just received interesting fundraising mail from the American Seniors Association (ASA). The ASA aims to offer an alternative to the left-wing extremist American Association for Retired People (AARP). I do not agree with the AARP on a host of issues, and I think that senior citizens are fools to be bamboozled by the AARP's left-wing dogma. I wish the ASA the best of luck and much success.

Thank you for promoting American Seniors Association. I am 64, a member of the ASA for 2 yrs., and a conservative Republican Christian. Never had any use for the AARP nor any of their so-called benefits. I hope that ASA gets better known so more like my husband and me will join.

It is interesting that if you go try to find ASA on Google using only ASA, I gave up after page 10. You have to write out the name to get to their site. Wonder why that is? I just learned about ASA from a friend and am in the process of checking it out. I also learned about AARP backing the Obama health plan and will more than likely cancel my membership in it. Any organization that is suppose to be for senior citizens and then backs the current health plan on the table is not a friend of us seniors. By the way, I am 65.

The St. Pete Times ran an article today, 11 August 2009, in which they gathered the information to pass judgment on Limbaugh's, Palin's, Medved's, Praeger's and other sub-culture radio pundits assertions that a committee would decide who would receive health care and who would be allowed to die under the Health Care Reform legislation. The "Political Fact" returned its verdict. There is no such provision in the Health Care Reform Bill. No surprise there for me. They're all talking without knowing the facts or they know the facts and they're lying thru their teeth.

I heard a good analogy today regarding an example of a program that the government runs which competes with the private sector. The United States Postal Service, UPS and FedEx are a prime example of a public and private service competing with each other, with the winner being the general public.

The fact is that making insurance conglomerates compete with a public health insurance alternative or with some regulation limiting their greediness could only help everyone, the insured and the, up-to-now, uninsured. This would keep the irresponsible Boards of Directors, wherever they might be, from conferring huge salaries, bonuses and perks to their CEOs that might otherwise benefit the patients. I’m sure the puppets causing the disruptions screamed bloody murder when the Wall Street Executives doled out Billion$ in bonuses even as we were going to their rescue with the Bailout. The government has run many agencies effectively to their benefit before they were born, as they grew-up in this technologically advanced society, and, continues doing so today. The CDC, FDA, EPA, OSHA, FAA, FCC, ICC, TVA, DOE, NRC, NASA, VA, HUD, FDOT, NOOA, SBA, Health & Human Services, Medicare, Medicaid, the Forestry Service, Social Security Administration, Interstate Highway Commission, US Dept of Education, Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Army have all been administered by the government and they as well every other American benefited from them. Yes, Government AND Private Industry always have to be monitored, audited and held accountable, but that shouldn’t keep us from addressing the problems that we face to make a better society. Health Care Reform, even with government involvement, is needed now.

Dear Friends: I wrote this blog some time ago. I had sent the ASA $50 more than two years ago. Since then I heard from them only once--when they sent me a letter asking for more money. I cannot recommend the ASA because I have not seen any evidence of good performance.

Dear Anonymous, It's interesting that you say your newspaper "proved" that the death panel idea is not in the proposed health care changes. The point is moot now. The Senate removed it.

I just cancelled my membership in AARP and joined with ASA. You can bet I will be telling others about ASA. AARP has gone too far "round the bend" and have become as socialist as Obama.

Obama is either uninformed or lying. The USPS is subsidized by the government. UPS and FedEx are not.

The Postal Service would be out of business if it had to compete on a level playing field with UPS and FedEx.

My last experience with AARP is revealing: Because of its position of Health Care Reform, as well as many other policies with which I have never agreed, I decided to resign. The web site has no place where one might do so. It does, however, allow you to send a letter to your congressman--the letter already written, (paraphrasing)telling your congress person that you are tired of the misinformation, etc. getting out about Obamacare. An alternative letter was not provided stating opposition to proposed reforms. AARP represents all seniors? Nonsense. I telephoned and resigned.
