John McCain's War Powers Act of 2014
H/t Constitutional Clayton and Mike Marnell
Dear Senator McCain:
Although I don't live in Arizona, I contributed $500 to your 2008 presidential campaign. I was surprised to hear you propose a revision to the War Powers Resolution, the War Powers Act of 2014.
Giving the authority to declare war to the executive branch is unconstitutional; it is also a mistake from a political standpoint. Presidents have been stupid about declaring unnecessary wars. Some examples are the the Vietnam War and the War in Iraq. The errors have been declaring too many wars, not declaring an insufficient number of wars.
American foreign policy since 1918, when the Council on Foreign Relations began, has been badly conducted. Quacks dominate foreign policy to an even greater degree than they dominate economics. Experts who might counsel a president to conduct a war are likely to be specialists in the arrogation of power; it is unlikely that they know more about foreign policy than the average American. Foreign affairs is a junk science, a field without findings, laws, general rules, or knowledge beyond the common sense accessible to anyone schooled in nations' cultures and political systems.
I oppose the War Powers Act, and I can no longer support you or a Republican Party that produces a scam like this.
Sincerely,
Mitchell Langbert, Ph.D.

Letter to Congressman Chris Gibson Re Immigration Reform
Mike Marnell forwarded Betsy McCaughey's video about the gang of eight's immigration reform proposal.

Dear Congressman Gibson:
The proposed immigration law being put forward by the gang
of eight is flawed and should be scotched.
Betsy McCaughey makes several points.
First, community organizations should have no role in the processing of
citizenship applications, including those of immigrants seeking asylum. Community organizations are partisan. Marco Rubio and John McCain are committing
direct partisan suicide by supporting this bill; I was skeptical of Mr. Rubio's
conservative credentials before, and they have been discredited now.
Second, the bill's proposed US Citizenship Foundation is a
Trojan horse. It is outrageous that potentially partisan groups like this are
being proposed to receive government funding.
Community organizations are fine as long as they are privately funded.
They should not receive sanctions of law.
Third, the Office of Civil Rights should not be involved in border
security and enforcement.
The America I once knew and that you defended is gone. This is no longer the land of the free. A government that regulates what you
eat, forces you buy insurance, and, like this bill, uses soviets or community
organizations to perform government functions is not the government of a free
people. Washington has failed America. America's can no longer be called a great
government.
Have you thought about transforming the federal government into a defense-and-tariff treaty and downloading all other federal responsibilities to the states? In its current form, from the Fed's garish monetary policy to social security to immigration regulation to the crackpot environmental proposals being put forth to federal gun control, the federal government is a failure. I see massive net losses to the public from Washington. The federal government's only useful responsibilities are defense and tariff coordination.

John McCain's Bronx Cheer--Too Little Too Late
I just received an e-mail from John McCain who is calling for the repeal of the health act. Rightly so, but his well taken Bronx cheer is too little too late. It was McCain's support for the Paulson-Bush bailout of Wall Street, an expansion of government that exceeds Obamacare in stupidity, that led to the Democratic majority that in turn led to this botched health care law. McCain says that when a politician goes against the will of the public he will not be reelected. McCain might have paid attention to his own advice in September 2008. His corrupt support for big government subsidies to incompetently run Wall Street firms that in the first place only exist because of big government was just as bad as the current Democratic rush to national bankruptcy and inflation.
John McCain writes:
>I believe the will of the people will be reflected sooner or later. The Democrats will learn in November, that when you go against the wishes of the American people, you pay a steep and heavy price. Americans will not be silenced on this matter and I will continue to lead this fight each and every day.
>I assure you I am not quitting our fight. I believe we must repeal this bill immediately.

Senator McCain Goes 'Round and Around
Laura Meckler of the Wall Street Journal Online (paid access) argues that John McCain followed a traditional Republican course of emphasizing tax cuts. She argues that if only McCain had "transcended the Republican brand" then McCain's fortunes would have improved, but in "the areas where Sen. McCain had staked out his independence, he and his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, agreed".
I disagree.
There was little conservative about the McCain campaign, nor more generally about post Y2K Republicans, at least in the Jacksonian sense.
There are two economic and political strands of Republicanism: the Progressive and the small government. The small government Republicans are the ones who descend from Andrew Jackson and the late nineteenth century hard money advocates. The Progressives descend from Henry Clay, Abraham Lincoln and the socialist Theodore Roosevelt. Progressive Republicans have mostly dominated 20th century national Republican politics. Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge were not small government men, nor was Ronald Reagan, really, although he borrowed the small government rhetoric. As for the Democrats, the Jackson Democrats had become a small minority by 1932. In the late nineteenth century they had become the Bourbon Democrats led by Grover Cleveland. After William Jennings Bryan identified the Democrats with inflation, the Republicans became the Jacksonian, laissez-faire party.
About 25% of the American electorate favors less government. If the Republicans capture this vote they can win. Small government people are in both parties, but they are mostly in the Republican Party. These voters stayed away from Senator McCain.
By 2005, the Bush administration had jettisoned any pretense of small government rhetoric in favor of special interest pandering. This has included the recent, disgraceful Wall Street bailout. The bailouts are Progressivism at a socialist level not seen since Theodore Roosevelt ran under the Progressive banner in 1912.
Big government Progressives dominate the Republican Party because they reflect corporate interests and have the most resources. They speak the language of efficiency and low taxes, but ultimately they are interested in policies that benefit themselves, which means subsidies, coddling and special breaks. Although they have the most resources, they don't have that many votes outside New York. They are comfortable with government bloat because budget deficits facilitate borrowing, which in turn facilitates monetary expansion. Monetary expansion boosts the stock market, and the music goes 'round and 'round. Indeed, I did not hear any evidence that John McCain would have been but another President Bloat, in the same tradition as Roosevelt, Hoover, Harding, Nixon and Bush. I leave out Taft, Coolidge and Reagan, although they should probably be included in the "Progressive" category as well, although they put a lid on it. Bush didn't know how to put a lid on it, and McCain didn't know it was an issue.
Thus, the Republican Party is inherently in conflict. If the Party can resolve the conflict it can win. This includes the specious resolution at which Ronald Reagan and Newt Gingrich succeeded. However, in the end, it is difficult to reconcile two fundamental antagonists: people who believe in fairness, laissez faire, limited government and low taxes; and people who believe in subsidies to big business at the expense of high taxes, and inflation in the name of growth.
By 2005 the Republicans had jettisoned their small government wing. The aim seems to have been to strike an alliance between big government Progressives and social conservatives. But enough social conservatives were disloyal to the Progressives because they were disgusted at the income inequality that Federal Reserve bank policy generates (most did not know this was the reason), the pandering to special interests, and Republican corruption.
The Republicans have failed the true conservative base, the remnant of the Jacksonian and late nineteenth century advocates of limited government, hard money and fiscal discipline. If Barack Obama reduces government and sheds his radical affiliations, the Progressive-social conservative alliance will never work again in my lifetime.
PS--this version isn't as good musically, but it is funny:

Voter Fraud May Be Elevating Turnout Stats
Wall Street Journal Online (paid access) reports:
"Michael McDonald, a politics professor at Virginia's George Mason University, predicted nearly 65% of the electorate would have voted by the time all polls closed -- matching or eclipsing the turnout in the presidential election of 1960 featuring candidates John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Not since 1908, when the U.S. was convulsing through a shift from the machine party politics of the 19th century to the free-for-all of modern campaigns, has so large a proportion of Americans participated in a presidential election."
The year 1908 is meaningful. In the nineteenth century voter turnout was high because the urban political machines routinely falsified votes. In the Progressive era around 1908 states began requiring voter registration, and voting rates fell below 50% from then on. Historians of the Progressive era often note this. This is the first year since 1908 that voting rates reached 65%. I wonder what portion of the exess 15% is due to enthusiasm about Barack Obama and John McCain, and what portion is due to fraud, notably by ACORN and other pro-Obama thugs.

Contrairimairi on the Election
Dear Mitchell,
In about 48 hours, people in this Country will be on the verge of a major civil war. I wish, and HOPE that I am wrong, but I don't know how I could be.
If BO wins, Those on the right will KNOW the election was stolen. Stolen by vote fraud, stolen by foreigners who intend to take this Country down from the inside. Stolen by anyone with enough money......
If JMc wins........whole 'nother story. I believe we will see rioting, the likes of which this Country has NEVER seen. I do not believe for a moment, that riots won't happen if BO wins, in fact, if past history proves anything, it is that there will be riots, no matter what the outcome, but they will be far more devastating if BO loses.
So, where does that leave us?
We have seen an election process that will not soon be forgotten. I cannot believe the stupidity and maniacal fervor with which BO's minions have supported him. I truly believe that much of this could have been avoided, had the media done it's job.........even 1/2 it's job. Instead, they have nearly guaranteed that this Country will in a few hours time, become a war zone!
I hate pessimism, but I also believe in truth. The end of this election will see both! The truth will be the reality of pessimism felt by the supporters of whichever candidate loses.
I truly believe that the next four years will seem intolerable to those whose candidate loses, and may also be intolerable to those who supported BO if he wins.
One has to wonder if the damage will be irreparable. Few members of the electorate will oppose their own incumbent candidates, while wildly supporting "imposed" term limits on others by the votes of constituents. This should nearly guarantee the re-election of democrats already holding office, and thanks to George, the installation of new democrats to replace the republicans being tossed out.
Many others have seen and called this scenario, but in just a few short hours, it is looking much more likely to soon be reality. A bit ironic, if you ask me. Americans have "wrapped" themselves in "reality". Television is permeated with some ridiculous idea that "reality" is what viewers really want. Ahhhhh....the old......"Be careful what you wish for!"
Despite the fact that most "reality" in viewers mind has little or nothing to do with "actual" realities, I think America is about to get a hefty dose of, "Wake up and smell the coffee!" If JMc wins, I think there will be bitter hatred along race lines for a VERY long time, but hopefully the nation will survive the economic onslaught. On the other hand, if BO wins, I fear very little will survive. I believe this Country may evaporate before our eyes in a "reality" that cannot be stopped after an hour of "air time".
48 hours, and America as we have known her will be altered.....maybe just for a while......maybe permanently, but for many of us, it will be a very sad passing.

Would Obama Side With Iran?
Baron Bodissey of Gates of Vienna reports that Iran has tested a nuclear bomb. He quotes "Israel National News":
"(IsraelNN.com) A weekend 5.0 Richter earthquake in Iran was actually a nuclear bomb test, says an Iranian nuclear scientist claiming to be working on the project."
My question on this is whether Barack Obama would side with Iran in the event of a nuclear strike on Israel. Who's giving odds on this? And who's willing to compare the odds with a President McCain's?

Obama Campaign Enraged Over Wright Ad
I just received the following from Scott Wheeler. Note the Obama campaign's continuing suppression of opposition speech.
We have now raised over $8 million in our final emergency effort to stop Barack Obama.
I can tell you that the Obama campaign is absolutely enraged by our activities and our new ad reminding voters of the close relationship between Rev. Wright and Obama.
Two of the major TV networks have temporarily suspended our ad because of complaints by the Obama campaign. They have complained about the pictures used in the ad depicting Obama and Rev. Wright.
Our legal team is fighting back. We expect to be back on the air!
Other pro-Obama supporters are claiming Obama was not really that close to Rev. Wright and that we are exaggerating the relationship.
The facts: Obama has stated that he was converted to Christianity by the Rev. Wright in his late 20s. Previous to that, as a child Obama had been raised by his stepfather as a Muslim.
Obama has described the Rev. Wright as a mentor, friend and advisor. His description, not ours.
Obama stated he could not reject Rev. Wright any more than he could reject the Black Church.
Again, his words, not ours.
All of Obama's attacks indicates this ad is having a powerful effect.
We are planning a final, major effort Monday night on television in key swing states and on Tuesday morning.
Anything you can contribute today will help our important cause.
Time is absolutely critical. Help us defeat Obama — Go Here Now.
Thank you.

All Things Are Ready If Our Minds Be So
Shakespeare's Henry V is about the 100 Years War and the famous battle at Agincourt in which 7,000 English commoners defeated 20,000 French noblemen through the use of the long bow. I use a clip of King Harry's famous "band of brothers" speech at Agincourt in some of my classes when discussing motivation and charisma. Perhaps John McCain should study both Sir Laurence Olivier and Kenneth Branagh, who offer excellent renditions.
Here's the St. Crispian's Day speech:
WESTMORELAND
O that we now had here
But one ten thousand of those men in England
That do no work to-day!
KING HENRY V
What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin:
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires:
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England:
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more, methinks, would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe* when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
Re-enter SALISBURY
SALISBURY
My sovereign lord, bestow yourself with speed:
The French are bravely in their battles set,
And will with all expedience charge on us.
KING HENRY V
All things are ready, if our minds be so.
WESTMORELAND
Perish the man whose mind is backward now!
KING HENRY V
Thou dost not wish more help from England, coz?
WESTMORELAND
God's will! my liege, would you and I alone,
Without more help, could fight this royal battle!
KING HENRY V
Why, now thou hast unwish'd five thousand men;
Which likes me better than to wish us one.
You know your places: God be with you all!

McCain Likely to Win--Florida and Election Dynamics on His Side
Two blogs (h/t Bob Robbins and Contrairimairi) capture a re-energized McCain campaign. This information contradicts the opinions of poller Sabado who appeared on Bob Grant the other night. First, Conservative Edge notes that early voting in Florida has resulted in a stunning shift:
"In a stunning shift in poll numbers, the LA Times estimates that John McCain leads Barack Obama 49-45 of those who have already voted in Florida, Just last week, a Times poll showed Obama leading 50-47 in the Sunshine state.
"But, the news gets worse for Obama. According to Florida Governor Charlie Crist, of the total citizens who have already voted, 54% are Democrats while 30% are Republicans. If these numbers hold up, and there is not a huge defection of GOP voters from McCain, Florida could be a blowout win for McCain.
"The coup de grace for Obama may come from Israel. Exit polls for absentee voting in that country show McCain winning 3-1 over Obama, despite a higher level of registered Democrats than Republicans."
Second, Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs features an eye-opening Red State.com post from a former Hillary worker now employed in the Obama campaign who argues that:
"Barack Obama doesn’t have a chance. His only chance is to foster disorganization, chaos, despair, and a sense of inevitability among the Republicans. It has worked up until now. Joe the Plumber has put the focus on the issues again, and this scares us more than anything. Being in a position to know these things, I will rate what the Obama campaign already knows are their weak links from the most important on down."
Potential breakdowns in the Obama campaign include former Hillary voters, Sarah Palin (whom the college educated elite hate but they wouldn't vote for McCain anyhow), and Obama's radical connections.

The Fable of Little Johnny
Contrairimairi has forwarded this fable of Little Johnny. I have not confirmed the facts with the Elmira school district.
LITTLE JOHNNY
A teacher in Elmira, New York asked her 6th grade class how many of them were Obama fans. Not really knowing what an Obama fan is, but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all the kids raised their hands except for Little Johnny.
The teacher asked Little Johnny why he has decided to be different again.
Little Johnny said, "Because I'm not an Obama fan."
The teacher asked, "Why aren't you an Obama fan?"
Johnny said, "Because I'm a Republican."
The teacher asked him why he's a Republican.
Little Johnny answered, "Well, my Mom's a Republican and my Dad's a Republican, so I'm a Republican."
Annoyed by this answer, the teacher asked, "If your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot, what would that make you?"
With a big smile, Little Johnny replied, "That would make me an Obama fan."
: ) Little Johnny - wise beyond his years.

Redalert: Republican Turnout In CA Exceeds Democratic
Doug Ross has forwarded a link to the following Redstate.com article by Redalert:
>"California has begun early voting already as well as mail-in balloting. The number of people who have gone in to vote in person has been extensive. The results so far prove what we had always suspected. The polls are being proven as totally unreliable. Although the results of early balloting have not been disclosed,of course, how many Republicans and how many Democrats have voted has been revealed.
>The results are simply shocking. The polls showed Barack Obama with an 18 point lead in California just a few days ago. The results thus far are the complete opposite. In the most liberal state in the entire country, the results are that 99,000 Republicans have voted and 96,000 Democrats voted. In the mail-in balloting the results so far are that 9,000 Democrats sent in their ballots and that 5,000 Republicans did so. So with nearly 210,000 people having voted, the Democrats have only a 1,000 vote advantage !
>If we take the liberty of assuming that all Republicans will vote for John McCain and all Democrats will vote for Obama, then the race is incredibly close. I'm sure that Obama will eventually win in California, but if he is struggling here after he pushed so hard for early voting, then he will lose the election ! Everybody thought he would win California in a landslide, but so far anyway,it's very tight. That means that in the less liberal states he is in real trouble.
>Ignore the pundits. Forget the polls. Get out there and vote for John McCain. The results in California show the wisdom of Yogi Berra who said, "It's not over until it's over."

McCain Sings Streisand
Raquel Okyay just forwarded this tape of John McCain singing Barbara Streisand. "She's been trying to do his job for a long time, now listen to what happens when he does her's"! Very funny. Almost as funny as Streisand's Progressive political ideas. Really.

Let's Rename The Media
I was just in a taxi on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. If you haven't been to the Big Apple in a while let me clue you in. Mayor Bloomberg has installed television screens in the taxi cabs. So you are force fed network-type news UNLESS you figure out how to turn the darn thing off, which takes a few minutes. The geniuses of the New York City Council have been so excited about the TV screens in the cabs that they decided it was imperative to waive the two-term limit for the otherwise do-nothing Mayor Bloomberg.
So while riding past Zabar's deli (great prices on cheese) I was forced to listen to a knock-off of network news. The bubble-headed, painfully stupid newscaster announced that Barack Obama is ahead in the polls.
When I got back I turned on the computer to read this message from Newsmax:
AP Poll Says It's Neck and Neck
"Wednesday,WASHINGTON – The presidential race tightened after the final debate, with John McCain gaining among whites and people earning less than $50,000, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll that shows McCain and Barack Obama essentially running even among likely voters in the election homestretch.
"The poll, which found Obama at 44 percent and McCain at 43 percent, supports what some Republicans and Democrats privately have said in recent days: that the race narrowed after the third debate as GOP-leaning voters drifted home to their party and McCain's "Joe the plumber" analogy struck a chord...."
The TV type on the Bloomberg Taxi News was saying that Obama is ahead, but AP, probably their own news source, said two days ago that the race is a tie. As I have previously blogged, a one or two percent Obama lead in the polls means that McCain is probably ahead.
Now were the bubbleheaded taxi newscasters lying, confused, or illiterate and so unable to read AP's release?
It has become increasingly obvious that bloggers have missed one cue. There is no mainstream media. The acronym "MSM" is a misnomer. The question that has been plaguing me is what would a better name be?
PAM--Pissant media
FM--Fringe media
DSPM--Dull and stupid people's media
LBM--Liberal borg media
3M-Mental Midgets' Media
Any suggestions out there?

Obama's Incredibly Shrinking Lead: IBD Tracking Poll Shows Dead Heat
The IBD tracking poll is more accurate than the mainstream media polls, possibly in part because of the strong bias among the mainstream media. On day 10 the results were Obama 45.7%, McCain 42.0%, which suggests to me and others who have e-mailed a McCain victory, because all polls have a "Bubba" bias. Also, I have heard that people have realized that Obama's supporters become violent and begin screaming, drooling and throwing things when they hear someone will not support their sociopathic candidate.
Today, Dan Friedman has forwarded the day 11 poll which indicates that Obama leads McCain by 1.1%. Anything less than a 4% Obama lead suggests a McCain victory, assuming that there is no massive voter fraud. Given the bad ethical climate surrounding the Obama campaign, the corrupt Chicago milieu in which he has operated, and the cynical "ends justify the means" utilitarianism of the thugs with whom he has surrounded himself throughout his life, it seems entirely possible that this election will be won through the gun barrel and through fraud, not through the democratic process.

Barney Frank Aims to Soak All Who Can Pay; Mairi Is Angry (and she's not gonna take it anymore!)
Contrairimairi just forwarded this video :
Mairi writes:
Good Ole Barney........if BO gets elected with THIS albatross hanging around his neck, then I am VERY, VERY afraid for the America we know and love.
In his exchange with O'Reilly, Barney refused to accept ANY responsibility for his part in the Market collapse. I ask you......after we saw a republican Senator dragged through the press and courts for "pussy-footin'" in restrooms, why do we NOT see Barney tarred, feathered, and run out of Washington on a rail for his part in concealing the dirty dealings of his homosexual partner's part in nearly destroying America?
Intead, Barney states that there are plenty of rich people still out there to drain of MORE tax dollars. He's already planning a "hit" on them in the near future.
I am so angry I could scream!
I WISH John and Sarah would widen the horizon on what DOES make a difference in this campaign! They barely skirt the edges of what is important. Contrary to the MSM, these topics are not "angry, hate speak"......they are the FACTS! Like it or not!
We saw the poll results start climbing for McCain/Palin when they bagan challenging BO on his relationship with Ayers. Then.......they switched focus and began focusing almost solely on "Joe the Plumber". Well.......Joe is great, but Americans are still angry........I am still angry........and John and Sarah are still the best outlet for our voices to be heard when it comes to BO's "allegiances".
They state just a few of the facts about BO's "neighbors", and then leave us hanging. WHY haven't they come forward with the correspondence and tax records that PROVE BO and Ayers shared an office for at least three years? Do you think most Americans will ever find out? HOW.......WHERE.......? If people are not savvy enough to know how to find the info online, it just might as well remain a secret.
In recent discussions with acquaintances, I have found VERY FEW of them know many of the recently surfacing facts. They don't know Farrakhan referred to BO as the "Messiah". They don't know BO and Ayers shared an office in Chicago for at least three years..........many don't even know there are lawsuits filed demanding proof of citizenship.
I have to tell you, I am REALLY frightened. As much as conservative blog sites are trying to avail people of the facts, there are still far too many Americans who just don't know.........for that alone, there is no way we can expect a "fair election". If Americans widely knew some of these facts, I think we would be looking at a whole different set of polling numbers.
I appreciate all the hard work that conservative bloggers do to get out the message, but John and Sarah are still the best bet, and I hope more people will visit their campaign sites and continue pressing them to carry our message.

McCain Hands Election to Obama
Dick Morris has an article in Newsmax concerning the threat that ACORN poses to the Obama campaign. Well, I mean, if any other candidate had been involved in a corrupt organization engaging in election fraud in 11 states there would be alot of questions, but not so with Obama, and not so with this election. But much of the media's indifference to Obama's various corruption scandals, to include the Tony Rezko house purchase and his lying about his Indonesian upbringing, is due to John McCain's indifference to these character issues.
Matters are worse than that, though. McCain had three ways to beat Obama. First, he needed to distance himself from the Bush administration, especially on the economy. Second, he needed to come up with an alternative strategy to the bailout. Third, he needed to focus attention on Obama's sociopathic character.
Instead, of dumping Bush, McCain took the traditional party course and backed the bailout. Thus, he has allowed the Democrats to paint him as a second Bush administration. The falling stock market (which may turn around beginning next week but remains volatile around three weeks before the election, and may still be declining in early November) is a poison pill, and he has allowed himself to be associated with it. McCain was a fool to participate in the bailout negotiation and he was a fool to back the Bush administration.
McCain's criticism of President Bush would have been warranted, because Bush exercised dinosaur stupidity, stupidity beyond human comprehension, in allowing Paulson and his coterie of quacks to force discussion of the bailout now. Any decision of this kind can wait six weeks. Bush chose to destroy McCain's chances. He deserves a place in Republican hell.
Second, McCain had to devise an alternative solution to the banks' problems that was fair. Increasing the money supply by one third and providing a trillion dollar subsidy to Wall Street and commercial banks is not fair. The public doesn't like it, and McCain simply went along with the absurdly socialist bank-coddling by President Bush. Rather than come down on this folly, which is anathema to any real believer in free markets, McCain chose the uncreative course of supporting Bush in one of the most socialist policies since 1935. What happened to the Republicans as the "party of ideas"? Most of the ideas I've heard from Newt Gingrich and John McCain have sounded like re-baked Keynesian economics from the 1930s.
Third, McCain had to make Obama's character into an issue. As Morris points out in his article, ACORN is being raided by the FBI in 11 states; Obama, as general counsel, was intimately linked to ACORN; and Obama "has lately spent $800,000 of his campaign money to subsidize the group's activities" which have been literally criminal. This opens the door to calls for investigation of Obama's involvement and character issues. Moreover, "as Election Day approaches and early balloting proceeds in many states, ACORN's tactics will get more and more media attention."
Thus, despite a sociopathic character, which we have heard McCain praise, "Obama has lower negatives than McCain, and his unfavorable rating has not risen despite the avalanche of attack advertising to which he has been subjected...Possibly, voters are just inured to the attacks and disregard them. But more likely they are just distracted by the financial meltdown all around them."
The Republicans have decided to lose big. What happened to all those pundits back in August who were saying that their grandmother could beat Obama?
John McCain and the Republicans are giving this election away.
