George Phillips, candidate for Congress in New York's 22nd Congressional district, forwarded a Kingston (NY) Freeman article about his opponent, Congressman Maurice Hinchey. Congressman Hinchey achieved national attention last spring when he proposed price controls on gasoline, a strategy that inevitably leads to shortages and misallocation of resources. Besides Hinchey's economic illiteracy, upstate New York's 22nd district appears to have a Congressman with a violence problem.
The Freeman article reads:
Ex-candidate says he saw Hinchey strike NRA member
By Paul Kirby , Freeman staff
KINGSTON - A former candidate for Ulster County executive says he saw U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey smack a man in the head at the Rosendale Street Festival this past summer - an incident that resulted in a harassment charge against the congressman.
Allan Wikman said this week he was "dumbstruck" and "shocked" when he saw Hinchey, D-Hurley, whack Paul Lendvay, chairman of the Catskill Re-gional Friends of the National Rifle Association, on the top of Lendvay's head...

George Phillips on Maurice Hinchey
George Phillips has written an excellent article for Poughkeepsie Journal on Congressman Maurice Hinchey's crackpot proposal to establish price controls on gasoline. Phillips reminds us of:
"the long gas lines and fuel rationing of the 1970s, and has seen the disastrous artificial shortages price controls created. Many gas stations were forced to restrict gasoline purchases to a few gallons per customer or only to commercial vehicles. Others closed down entirely, unable to find gasoline for their customers."
Phillips astutely points out:
"supply and demand is a natural law of the land...The plan would effectively shut down oil companies that could lose far less money by simply not selling gasoline."
The bottom line is that America, and New York's 22nd Congressional district, would be better off with Phillips, not Hinchey, as Congressman.

Hinchey Gas Cap Misguided
The Middleton Times Herald Record printed my June 8, 2008 letter in their Sunday edition and online here
Hinchey gas 'cap' misguided
Rep. Hinchey's recent call for a price control or "cap" on gasoline prices is misguided.
Those who remember the 1970s gasoline lines know that rationing causes shortages. With a "cap," those who need gasoline the most would be unable to get it, while the politically connected would have ample supplies. The "cap" would harm the environment because those who have political access to the gasoline would squander it because of low prices.
New York state's gerrymandering seems to have affected Hinchey's sanity.
